I'm just in the process of moving my blog from WP.com to self hosted (with MediaTemple). I'd ran the MediaTemple install tool, which gave me v2.3, then downloaded v2.5 and followed the 3 step instructions. At honestly couldn't have been simpler - a very neat and tidy install. The new dashboard is much improved - couldn't tell you about widgets though as I don't currently have any installed.
Watch this space for updates...

Aah thanks! My Wordpress blog was already being re-directed to my jonathanmulholland.com domain anyway, so it shouldn't have much of an impact.

I didn't know that. I assumed it would take a few days for my new site to get indexed, and then it would be back in the rankings. Is that not the case?
